This is an unpublshed drawing by the great Frank Brangwyn.

One of the things I like best about this drawing is how Brangwyn can render in a tight, representational way when he wants to, but he does not let the parlour trick of realism distract him from the higher goals of the drawing. This is a beautifully designed picture.

Many artists with great technical skill have had long, highly successful careers meticulously capturing eyelashes and fingernails. Boris, Vargas, Duillo and Rowena are examples that come to mind. I respect their discipline but I find their work incredibly boring. Artists like Brangwyn, who are able to keep realism in perspective, start where those artists leave off.
